World BASC Organization Participates in WCO Seminar on Customs Integrity and the Fight Against Corruption

Date

The International President of the World BASC Organization (WBO), Erik Moncayo, participated as a moderator in the virtual seminar organized by the Vice-Chair for the Americas and the Caribbean Region of the World Customs Organization (WCO), titled “Fostering Cooperation Between Customs and the Private Sector to Strengthen Integrity and Combat Corruption.” On this occasion, BASC was invited to moderate the session “Technological Tools to Strengthen Integrity and Improve Compliance,” aimed at sharing best practices around digital solutions and innovative approaches to strengthen institutional capacity in the customs domain.

Throughout the seminar, customs authorities and private sector representatives shared success stories and initiatives related to transparency, digitalization, and regulatory compliance, highlighting the importance of collaboration among key actors in international trade.

The seminar opened with remarks by Manuel Emilio Sánchez Peralta, Deputy National Superintendent of Customs at SUNAT, Peru, representing the WCO Vice-Chair for the Americas and the Caribbean Region, and Alfonso Rojas González de Castilla, President of the Regional Private Sector Group (GRSP) for the Americas and the Caribbean. Both emphasized the importance of building trust through joint efforts between the public and private sectors.

During the panel “Building Trust: Synergies Between Customs Transparency and Business Collaboration,” Ana Carlissa Benitez de Beltrán, Deputy Director of Resources at the National Customs Directorate of El Salvador, and Alejandro Terzian, Vice President of the Global Customs and Trade Facilitation Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce, shared insights on customs integrity as a key factor for regional development, and the role of public-private cooperation in driving continuous improvement in global logistics processes.

The session moderated by Erik Moncayo featured presentations by María Victoria Cornacchione, Head of the Institutional Transparency Department at the National Customs Directorate of Uruguay, and Elsa Muñoz Cortés, Customs Manager for North America at AliExpress. Their contributions provided valuable insights to more than 300 seminar attendees, addressing topics such as the digitalization of the supply chain as a key tool to promote transparency and reduce corruption risks, and the Compliance 4.0 approach, focused on leveraging technology to automate data analysis, mitigate risks, and enhance regulatory compliance.

WBO’s participation in this forum is aligned with the commitments established under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the World Customs Organization in 2007, through which both organizations expressed their shared commitment to promoting secure and reliable international trade.

As a strategic ally to the private sector, governments, and international organizations, WBO continues to advocate for the adoption of practices that reinforce integrity, transparency, and security in global trade. At the same time, it actively supports initiatives that foster dialogue, strengthen regional cooperation, and contribute to building a more secure and trustworthy trade environment across the Americas and the Caribbean.
